Located near downtown Lawrence, The University of Kansas hosts over 28,000 graduate and undergraduate students. All students pay a health fee and can receive some services at Watkins Health for reduced rates. Services include massage therapy, pharmacy, travel, gynecology, orthopedic, sexual assault, allergy and immunization clinic, and laboratory. Students can use beak’em bucks for both OTC and prescription medications. Some testing and services are covered in the student health fee while others may be at a reduced rate, or at full charge. KU provides non-psychiatric counseling for $15 a session, if the student has payed the mandatory CAPS (Counseling and Psychiatric Service) fee. Other counseling is available for higher fees.
KU also has a health education resource office with a student-led “HERO” group which provides education to the campus about alcohol and drugs, nutrition and physical activity, self time management, and sex education. The HERO office provides programs for tobacco cessation, weight loss, stress reduction, and free safer sex materials and free HIV testing.
Clinic services at the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department for KU students include: tobacco use prevention and cessation, immunizations, condoms, pregnancy tests, HIV tests, birth control methods, TB skin test and medication, and STD testing. STD services include: confidential Hepatitis C testing for at-risk individuals also being tested for HIV, confidential STD testing and treatment, counseling, education, Hepatitis A and B vaccinations for eligible clients and free HIV testing as part of STD exam or on a walk-in basis.
