The Lawrence Douglas County Health Department offers condolences to the family of Dr. Douglas Dechairo, who passed away on May 26 after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of lung cancer.

Dr. Dechairo, as director of Watkins Health Service at the University of Kansas, had served as a Lawrence Douglas-County Health Board member since 2013 under appointment by the University of Kansas Chancellor.

“Given both his ties to the community and national experience through an impressive career in health care and public health, Doug was a great resource as a board member and a wonderful partner for the Health Department,” said Dan Partridge, Director of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. “We miss him dearly, and we send our deepest sympathies to Lucy and the entire family.”

If you would like to honor him, visit kuendowment.org/givenow. The Watkins Health Services staff established a fund in appreciation of his years of service and giving to the health center. You can make a gift to benefit the Watkins Health Services Development Fund and note that the gift is in honor of Dr. Doug Dechairo. He identified how he wanted donated funds to be targeted for special projects or programs that will benefit students.
