The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department's annual “Kickin' It With WIC” event will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the back parking lot of the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St.

The event is for families enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The event focuses on the importance of being active and provides ideas for fun and inexpensive activities. Some of this year's activities include: hopscotch, jump rope, tricycle races and an obstacle course. Willow, a bunny puppet, will be providing nutrition education. There also will be information about community health services and programs.

“It's important that children exercise regularly to set them on the path towards a lifetime of physical fitness and good health,” WIC Supervisor Rachel Levy said. “Children and adults alike are more likely to engage in exercise when it's fun and convenient. The event will offer a range of fun activities that families can do at home - rain or shine.”

The WIC program serves pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children ages 5 and under, who meet income guidelines and are determined to be at nutritional risk. Participants receive nutrition counseling and checks to purchase healthy foods for their families. There are about 1,500 individuals participating in the Douglas County WIC program.
