Data Briefs

Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health has been releasing data briefs for years, on a range of subjects that are pertinent to Douglas County residents. The COVID-19 pandemic limited our ability to focus on these informational documents, but we are now recommitting ourselves to this service. These documents are meant to be shared and created to be accessible and easily printed.

Suicide continues to be a pressing public health problem in Douglas County. Data shows that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in Douglas County for people aged 15- 44 and the 8th leading cause of death for all ages. Click here to view the 2025 Suicide Data Brief.

The 2022 Pediatric Suicidal Ideation Data Brief looks at the rates of suicidal-ideation (SI) related emergency department (ED) visits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to determine what mental health impacts the crisis had on youth age 10-17 in Douglas County. We hopes that this Data Brief will be used as a tool to influence and guide local decisions related to pediatric mental health as our community continues to move towards recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our study found that public health emergency like COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the already high proportion of suicidal ideation-related ED visit for children and adolescents in Douglas County. Youth aged 10-17 years, especially middle school aged teens, are more vulnerable and adversely affected by COVID.” Aihua Zhu, LDCPH Senior Analyst and author
